THOU SHALT HONOR THY PALATE BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

Maybe you’re in a rush and you just wish your co-barista could sling a latté in half the time. Or perhaps they forgot to top up the syrup bottles and now you’re rooting through the cabinet for a bottle of vanilla. But to quote a classic hymnal about fellowship during tough times: we’re all in this together. Be patient and remember that, first and foremost, you and your co-barista are a team.

Thou shalt not make for thyself an idol out of Palate brothers and sisters—for thine Palate brothers and sisters are not perfect.
I mean, nobody’s perfect.

Thou shalt not misuse the spelling of Palate.
It’s not pallet nor is it palette. Nor is it Pilates although I would be all for Pilates if that was offered.

Remember thy shift by keeping it: in it thou shalt not do any work that is not Palate work, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy Sanford gates.
Hey, the number one trait for a stellar Palate barista is dependability. Honor thy shift.

Honor thy milk substitutes. Even when thy customer asketh for almond milk in thine frappé—for almond milk in thine frappé is permissible even when thou thinketh not.
Customer’s always right. Right? Right.

Thou shalt not murder. Obviously.

Thou shalt not commit adultery and cross thy threshold carrying thine own Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks macchiato.
Although, if you are stopping by Starbucks, please bring me a slice of their pumpkin bread.

Thou shalt not steal thy barista’s espresso shot when thy barista is “in the flow” and intends to prepareth thy Americano for customer.
Hell hath no fury like a barista who is interrupted when they are in the flow.

Thou shalt not give false testimony to thy customer, exhorting them to “stay as long as you like” while paying no heed to thine closing hour.
Trust me. They will stay as long as they like if you say so.

Thou shalt not covet thy barista’s latté skills.
Everyone learns at their own pace. I (Rachel) have been barista-ing for almost two years now and I still can’t get the rosetta down! But there’s no point in giving up. I will master it…one day.
