My First Shift at Palate Bubs & Ice Cream

Rachel Sammons . October 14, 2019

1:00 p.m. Clock into Palate Bubs & Ice Cream. Heidi’s maneuvering the waffle iron, Georgia’s offering samples to customers, and Tina’s working the register. Okay, I can do this.

1:05 p.m. A customer asks which signature ice cream is my favorite.

1:06 p.m. Well, my top three is Dawson’s Pile, Guavalicious, and Oh My Pumpkin Pie. Peanut Butter Extreme and Red Velvet Masterpiece is pretty good too. ‘Course you can’t go wrong with Cookies Galore. Or S’more Please. Or The Palate. Does that help?

2:00 p.m. Heidi shows me how to make the waffle batter in a bowl that could fit three soccer balls. I whisk the batter using both arms. Then I post a selfie of me flexing my biceps. #fitness.

2:37 p.m. Birthday party! Every little girl wants a signature ice cream.

2:40 p.m. Drizzle batter into the waffle iron. It’s like being at a Super 8 (except not).

2:55 p.m. Finish serving the birthday party. Do some stretches.

3:15 p.m. My friend visits and wonders aloud if he should just get ice cream, no bubble waffle. No, dude, go ALL IN.

3:45 p.m. Yes, you read that right. We have an ice cream flavor called garbage can.

4:02 p.m. A customer orders a Dawson’s Pile and I’m like, yes! I get to say, two scoops of garbage, please.

4:05 p.m. Dawson’s Pile…okay…that’s cookie crumbles, Reese’s Pieces, Heath bars, gummy bears, Kit Kats, graham crackers, Nutella, and rainbow sprinkles. Or is it Kit Kats, Nutella, cookie crumbles, rainbow sprinkles, Reese’s Pieces, graham crackers, gummy bears, and heath bars? Or wait no. It’s totally graham crackers, Reese’s Pieces, rainbow sprinkles, Nutella—no wait.

4:10 p.m. What do you mean you just want vanilla?

4:37 p.m. Wow. It’s like Dawson’s Pile was created by a three-year-old.

4:55 p.m. I find out Dawson’s Pile was created by a three-year-old. Named Dawson.

5:15 p.m. A customer asks what Build Your Bub is. It’s like Build-A-Bear except the animal is a bubble waffle and the stuffing is the ice cream. You can even name it if you want.

5:30 p.m. I treat myself to a Cookies Galore. I can totally finish this.

5:40 p.m. Does anyone want the rest of my Cookies Galore?

6:00 p.m. A customer recognizes me and says, “you work at the coffee shop and here?” I’m like, yeah, THIS IS THE DREAM.

6:33 p.m. We have a lull! Georgia, Tina, Heidi, and I sweep, wipe down windows, and refill the sample spoons.

6:58 p.m. A customer orders The Palate. I stick an iced coffee infusion into the ice cream. It looks like a tiny syringe. A delicious syringe.

7:22 p.m. Heidi, Georgia, and Tina put the chocolate drizzle on the Peanut Butter Extreme, the Fruity Pebbles on the Guavalicious, and the Oreo cookie crumbles on the Cookies Galore. I’m like, do you guys have all the toppings memorized? They say no.

8:02 p.m. I serve my first signature ice cream. You want a spoon? You’re going to need napkins. Do you want an extra bowl? I’m going to get you some paper towels too.

8:38 p.m. Let’s wrap it up!

9:00 p.m. Well, we do close now. But alright, if the little girl wants an ice cream, I’ll make her an ice cream.

9:05 p.m. Oh…she wants a Dawson’s Pile?
